November Project – Going Green

Four simple steps. Think before you use that ZIPLOCK...do you have a glass container that may do the job? xo:

So for this month I am going to improve my green footprint I intend on making it part of my lifestyle in the end- cutting out plastic bags and containers, recycling etc.

Half way through last month a couple of articles were popping up about going green and it got me thinking that there is  little things that I can do to . We live on such an amazing planet and our man made products that we use not only have a bad impact on our planet but also on our own life, our bodies, the air we breathe and the way we feel.

THE TRASH AND WHAT IT’S CAUSING:

Waste of resources: All waste materials represent an investment of water, energy and natural resources, such as coal, oil or trees. Once waste goes to landfill, virgin material has to be taken from our environment to produce new products.

Greenhouse gases: As waste rots in landfill, carbon dioxide and methane are created. The latter is a major greenhouse gas, which contributes to global warming 21 times more than carbon dioxide.

Landfill space and contamination: It is difficult to find suitable locations for landfills. At current rates of waste disposal, we are soon running out of space. Landfills produce a toxic liquid, called leachate. Leachate is a mixture of organic acids, dissolved chemicals and rainwater. It can contaminate surrounding land and waterways. 2

Threat to marine life: Every year over 6 million tonnes of rubbish are dumped into the world’s oceans. 80% of this waste is plastic and has led to an estimated 46,000 pieces of plastic for every square mile of ocean and is responsible for killing more than a million seabirds and 100,000 mammals every year.

I am starting small, I 100% believe that if I go all out and try and change everything i will become overwhelmed and I won’t follow through. As I mentioned above I do intend on making it a lifestyle so with that in mind I am happy to start implementing little improvements each week. For example instead of using plastic containers use glass containers for my food prep.  I bought 2 glass containers this week and i generally prep for a week, so I will still be using some plastic containers for the time being but each week I will buy one more glass container  and eliminate a plastic one so that buy the end of the month I will have cut out all of the plastic containers and have all glass.

So for the time being here is a few things that I have started implementing into my life and I will take it from there! 🙂

  1. We have started a Compost – Composting is nature’s process of recycling decomposed organic materials into a rich soil.By composting your organic waste you are returning nutrients back into the soil in order for the cycle of life to continue.  Home composting is also a valuable tool in educating children about nature and the cycle of life. So any food scraps that we have will end up here.
  2. Decreasing my usage of plastic bags and containers  – this is going to take some time but I would eventually like to use no plastic bags when shopping. I am now drinking out of a glass water bottle rather than a plastic one and have bought a couple of glass containers.
  3. Recycle

If you want to join in, come on board. Let me know what you are going to start doing in your life to make a difference or what you are currently doing.
